Daypacks

Daypacks are the perfect solution for the traveller who wants to leave most of their gear at their base location, and carry the smaller important items like passports, wallets, cards, and cameras. A daypack is also the perfect solution for any outdoor activity that requires you to carry more gear than you can put in your pockets.

Daypacks come in all shapes, from backpack attachable, to stowaway compactable, and a practical daypack will help make your day-to-day activities easier to complete and help you on your journey.

Daypacks are not only for hiking, or travel but are common amongst commuters and businesspeople alike, a daypack is convenient to carry and large enough to accommodate a wide range of day-to-day essentials if necessary.

What to look for in a daypack?

There are four main things to consider when purchasing a daypack:

  • Purpose/Activity: How will you use your daypack? This will help narrow down your search to those bags that have the features you require.
  • Capacity: How much gear do you need to take?
  • Features: Do you require a non-technical daypack that does not have an internal frame, or do you need something that is well supported, adequate ventilation and comfort features.
  • Fit: Does the backpack cater for a wide range of body shapes and sizes?

What is a good-sized daypack?

20-35L is usually around the ideal size for a daypack for either short day activities like day hikes or commutes that require you to take laptops, lunch boxes and the like. 35-50L daypacks are for the activities that require you to carry a little more gear like large camera equipment, extra clothing, towels and perhaps additional food, or winter gear if you are hiking during the cooler months.

What are the Daypack types?

Hiking - A hiking daypack, climbing daypack are considered a technical or semi technical daypack and will typically have an internal frame system, adjustable harnesses and added comfort features, along with hydration reservoir pockets and plenty of storage.

Commuter/Regular Daypack - A regular or commuter day pack may not have the above technical features as an internal framing system or hydration reservoir sleeve, because it is not necessary, but may have added features such as RFID pockets or sleeves for laptops, phones, and other devices. Such as the Osprey Nebula or Daylite range.

Travel Daypacks – A Travel daypack may have a combination of Hiking/Climbing and Commuter daypack features. Mainly because these daypacks can be used to carry laptops, clothing, camera gear and used as carry-on luggage in planes. And once you get to your destination you can off-load the excess baggage and use your daypack in whatever capacity is needed.
